Description
"Fireweed is an herb often found in burned-over lands; the name Fireweed derives from the species' abundance as a coloniser on burnt sites after forest fires making it a clear example of a pioneer species."
The young shoots were often collected in the spring by Native American people and mixed with other greens. When properly prepared soon after picking, fireweed is a good source of vitamin C and pro-vitamin A. It also has medicinal purposes.
Candies, syrups, jellies and even ice cream are made from fireweed.
In Russia, its leaves were often used as tea and were even exported, known as Kapor tea.
Fireweed is the floral emblem of Yukon.
