Description
in the year 2001 while in a public place, a stranger walked up to me and presented me with a hand-crafted drum, and said to me, "this is for you, turn it into art".
the drum itself is a beautiful work of art, it has a wonderful sound.
i graciously accepted this gift from this man who told me he is of the Blackfeet Nation of Montana, he had seen some of my works, and he wanted me to have this gift.
I kept this drum for several years after, and i thought about it often, but it was not until the year 2008 that i actually finished this painting which i painted in tribute to the man who gave the drum to me and a tribute to the Blackfeet Nation.
I call it "Black Elk" It is a hand-crafted deerskin drum which i painted with acrylics, then sewed into the face of the drum wild turkey feathers found on a hike in the wilderness, a tied together with red leather thonging and for the finishing touch added one brass bead and two glass trade beads. I took a foto of my work, then touched up the foto in Photoshop CS4 to smooth the paint and remove some glare spots from the highlighting on the rough texture of the thick paint.
The drum measures approximately in inches 12"H x 12"W x 2 1/2"D
